On Friday, July 17, 2020, we lost another giant from the civil rights movement. Congressman John R. Lewis was an American hero! He truly fought the good fight of faith. I am honored that I had an opportunity to meet and introduce him during one of the galas for the Alcorn State University (ASU), Mid-Winter Conference, hosted by the Washington, DC ASU Alumni Chapter.
His life was a living testimony of II Timothy 4:7, I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Some of the powerful lessons that we can learn from this life well lived are as follows:
Be consistent. His work and service to our country dates back over 60 years. Particularly, his outspoken support for voting rights, justice and racial equality, has paved the way for so many others that will follow.
Be courageous. He was uncompromising in what he believed - even in the midst of danger.
Be a challenger. He did not accept the status quo; because he was outspoken about advocating for all.
Be committed. He was adamant and passionate about obtaining justice and equal rights for all.
It is now up to us, to get into “good trouble” by continuing the legacy of Congressman Lewis and the late Rev. C.T. Vivian, another tremendous force during the civil rights period that transitioned on that same day.
Thank you both for fighting the good fight!
