Hold to God’s Unchanging Hand by Jennie Wilson 1905
Time is filled with swift transition,
naught of earth unmoved can stand;
Build your hopes on things eternal;
hold to God’s unchanging hand!
Our theme this year is trusting God! We introduced this series earlier this year by discussing how do you trust God when everything around you says, “Give up” or “Hide” because you feel completely overwhelmed! Next, we talked about the importance of silencing the noise. Today, we will pick up with the next step, and that is to be anchored in His Character -Trusting God’s Unchanging Hand!
You see, the words coined by Jennie Wilson in 1905 still hold true today. We are living in a season where change feels constant, and stability feels rare. We have so much going on nationally that it is incredibly hard to keep up with it all. Honestly, I am not sure that we should even try! Our political landscape shifts constantly, policy changes have become common practice, and the tone of public discourse often leaves us anxious and divided. At the same time, many families are facing a growing affordability crisis. The cost of food, gas, housing, healthcare, and other basic needs are stretching budgets thinner than ever before. Not to mention the ongoing reality of war and global unrest. All of this going on at the same time can feel as if the ground beneath us is always moving.
Even closer to home, we have to deal with change in a very personal way when it lands at your doorstep. Families experience illness, loss, job transitions, growing children, aging parents, and relational challenges. These personal shifts remind us that life rarely remains as it once was. What felt predictable and calm yesterday may feel uncertain today.
It is during times like these that we find comfort and strength in a familiar hymn, Hold to God’s Unchanging Hand! These words still speak with quiet strength. They still remain relevant and are still needed! This hymn does not deny change; it acknowledges it. Yet, it calls believers to anchor themselves somewhere deeper than circumstances. When everything around us seems to move, we are reminded that God does not!
The Bible affirms what our hearts desperately need during times like these. Hebrews 13:8, Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Psalm 46:1, God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Isaiah 43:2, When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers; they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.
Governments change. Economies fluctuate. Nations rise and fall. But Christ remains the same in His love, character, power, and promises. The same Savior who calmed storms, healed the broken, and called the weary to Himself, still holds us today. This truth gives us more than comfort; it gives us direction. Rather than placing our hope in systems that may fail or leaders who are temporary, we are invited to place our trust in the One whose authority is eternal.
The hymn’s message urges believers to build their hope on what lasts rather than what fades. In a world that constantly calls us to chase security through possessions, status, or control, Scripture offers a different perspective. This does not mean ignoring the realities of life. It means facing them with anchored hearts. A heart grounded in eternal truth. When our hope is rooted in God’s unchanging character, we are not easily shaken by daily headlines or personal setbacks.
As we navigate uncertainty, economic strain, global conflict, and deeply personal challenges, we are not walking alone. We are held by a faithful God whose hand has never let go of His people. May we, in this season, choose to anchor our hope not in what is temporary, but in the unchanging hand of our Savior, trusting Him to guide us through every change, until the day our journey is complete.
As we stand on trust in God in 2026, let’s unite in prayer for hearts to be transformed, healing and peace across our land, and an unshakable trust in God to guide us through every challenge. No matter what headlines scream or circumstances bring, we choose to stand firm in faith. God’s plans for us are greater than anything we face. So in 2026, let’s silence the noise, trust Him fully, and look for the remarkable in every moment.
Always look for the Remarkable in your life!
