How Do You Re-Imagine Contentment During War?

I initially planned to highlight the 2026 Alcorn State University National Alumni Mid-Winter Conference recently held in Memphis, Tennessee. It was an outstanding gathering! It included rich fellowship, powerful connections, and a reminder of what it means to come together with purpose. This purpose is needed even though historically Black colleges and universities have a proven track record of over 100 years of preparing students academically to compete around the world and supporting their local communities.
But plans shifted!
We woke up Saturday morning to news that shook each of us! The kind of news that makes you pause and wonder, what? We were now at war. The coverage of bombs destroying everything was overwhelming. I was quickly reminded of the feelings I had on the morning of 9-11 in Washington, DC, after the terrorist attacks. The fear, casualties, uncertainty, devastation, and the unknown made me afraid about our future. In an instant, our world had changed. That same feeling came over me on Saturday morning. It reminded me just how fragile life is and how quickly the ground beneath us can seem unstable.
And suddenly, the question was no longer, “What’s next on the calendar?”The question became: How do you have contentment when you don’t know what to expect or how you might be impacted?
I believe that we should not ignore reality or minimize pain. Although this war is in a foreign land, I know it will have a direct impact on each of us. Therefore, this is an invitation to recognize that worry does not prepare us for tomorrow; it only drains us today. Contentment, then, becomes a spiritual posture. We must choose to remain grounded even when answers are incomplete. During times of conflict, whether global, communal, or personal, we must return to what contentment truly is. Contentment is not pretending everything is fine. It is deciding where your mind and heart will dwell.
The Bible reminds us in: John 16:33, I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. Matthew 6:25- 27, Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life… Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? Isaiah 26:3,You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.
Re-imagining contentment during war means choosing, sometimes moment by moment, to place our thoughts back into God’s care. It means rejecting fear and allowing faith to guide our response. There is a quiet courage in choosing peace when fear is readily available. There is strength in trusting God when the path ahead is unclear. Honestly, we don’t know how things will play out, but we know who holds us in His hand.
Re-imagining Contentment during war is not about having all the answers. It is about returning to the One who does.
So today, we pause.
We pray.
We breathe.
We advocate.
We must choose to live from God’s perspective, trusting that even now, contentment is still possible. Remember, you are not alone on this journey. We will get through this season together. Thank you for your unwavering love and support. As we stand on trust in God in 2026, let us unite in prayer for transformed hearts, healing across our land, and an unshakable trust in God to guide us through every challenge.
Always look for the Remarkable in your life!
